Energy Transfer
Have you ever thought about how much energy is being transferred when your oil supplier fills your central heating tank? Probably not!
The energy transfer rate is equivalent to that of a small power station - here's the calculation. The flow rate is about 360 litres/min and the energy per litre is 37MJ.
Of course, if you actually burned the fuel in a power station, then you would only generate a proportion of this due to the station's efficiency. Its efficiency could be as low as 36-40% for a conventional system or up to 60% for a combined cycle system. Wikipedia has more information on the comparison between conventional thermal and CCGT stations.
